Knowledge sharing tour - Paterson Arran

See how Scottish food manufacturer Paterson Arran is saving energy, cutting costs and meeting its long-term sustainability goals. (CANCELLED)
Paterson Arran products

From its roots as a husband and wife team selling home baked oatcakes in Rutherglen, Paterson Arran has grown to be one of Scotland’s best-known independent food brands - now part of Burton’s Biscuits, the business produces the number one shortbread brand in Britain today and sells millions of biscuits, oatcakes and Arran jars across the globe.

Since 2006 the company’s output has increased by over 80% to meet growing demand. This rapid growth has been achieved while also taking a strong stance on sustainability:

  • Between 2006 and 2018 Paterson Arran reduced the amount of general waste it generated by 59%. And since 2014 none of it goes to landfill, instead it is used to generate electricity.
  • All food production waste is recycled for animal feed.
  • The energy used to make each tonne of product has been reduced by 42% between 2006 and 2018.
  • The water used to make each tonne of product has been reduced by 59% between 2006 and 2018, with a 24% total reduction in water consumed between 2006 and 2018.

The business has achieved these savings in a number of ways including:

  • Installation of new LED lights throughout the factory.
  • The use of voltage optimisation and power correction equipment.
  • Innovative environmental campaigns to boost staff engagement.
  • Developing a comprehensive plan to eliminate food waste from process.

These projects have not only reduced the businesses’ environmental impact. They have also resulted in an estimated £69,000 in annual cost savings.

The success has also led to Paterson Arran being awarded ISO14001 accreditation for environmental management, grabbing top place for sustainable practice and living at the 2017 VIBES Scottish Environment Business Awards and winning the Environmental Sustainability Award at the 2017 Scotland Food & Drink Excellence Awards.
