Whisky distiller Gordon & MacPhail burns less cash by switching to gas

Switching to gas over oil, and installing a dual fuel burner, saved Moray-based whisky distillers, Gordon & MacPhail, a warm and hearty £50,000
  • Switch to natural gas over oil and installs dual fuel burner
  • Investment paid back within one year
  • Potential yearly savings of £50,000 and 40% reduction in CO2

Oil is a common fuel in rural locations but it’s often a costly source of heat and energy. Scotch whisky distiller and bottler, Gordon & MacPhail, made the switch to natural gas after consultation with our experts. This change, together with the installation of a dual fuel burner, required initial investment, which was paid back within a year.

Gordon & MacPhail has been in business on the Moray coast for over 120 years and has around 150 staff.  In 1998, the company opened its first distillery, the Benromach Distillery, in Forres. It contacted us looking to make savings on energy costs. After initial discussion, our experts suggested an immediate course of action – move away from oil and install a natural gas supply. In addition, they advised fitting a new dual fuel burner to the existing steam boiler. This would improve efficiency and flexibility.

“The specialist advice we’ve had from Resource Efficient Scotland has been invaluable,” says Neil Urquhart, Director of HR & Compliance, Gordon & MacPhail. “The new system will not only reduce our costs and our carbon footprint, it also means less risk and fewer road miles for the business. We’ll now get gas from the mains supply instead of relying on oil being delivered to us by truck.”

Gordon & MacPhail is on course to make yearly savings of up to £50,000 a year. And the company’s new, more reliable energy supply has reduced carbon emissions by 40 per cent. Now that’s worth raising a dram to.
