Upgrade of heating, lighting and insulation saves Scallywags Nursery around £20k a year

We provided a free assessment that identified a range of measures to improve the nursery’s energy efficiency and reduce running costs.

Scallywags Children’s Nursery has been operating in Longstone, Edinburgh since 2002. In September 2015 the company acquired the Ex-servicemen’s Club in Loanhead, in order to open a second nursery on the premises.

In order to cut energy costs, the nursery were interested in installing renewable technologies as part of the building refurbishment. The business was referred to Resource Efficient Scotland. We provided a free assessment of the nursery and identified a range of measures which could be installed to improve the energy efficiency of the building and reduce overall running costs. Measures included;

  • LED lighting
  • Insulation
  • A new condensing gas boiler
  • Double glazed windows and doors
  • Solar PV

In total our assessment identified annual potential savings of £28,800. With a capital investment of £115,000, this would give a payback of four years.

 The support from Resource Efficient Scotland was a great help in improving the efficiency of the nursery. The interest-free loan was particularly useful; many of the refurbishment costs were higher than expected, and without the loan cash flow could have become an issue. The new equipment is working well and we are already looking at next steps to monitor and reduce our energy and water use.” Robert Farren, Joint Company Director.

Priority measures were the upgrade of heating and lighting and installation of double glazing.

The nursery took out an interest-free*, unsecured Resource Efficient Scotland SME Loan to cover the capital costs of these measures. Funded by Scottish Government the loans are available to small and medium-sized businesses operating in Scotland for energy, water and waste efficiency projects. (*There is a 5% interest rate for renewable technologies to help organisations claim the renewable heat incentive.)

Further to the main refurbishment, the business has considered further opportunities to improve its resource efficiency including:

  • Installing a water meter
  • Implementing regular monitoring of energy and water use
  • Improving programming of their heating controls.
