Island community shop upgrades chiller cabinets and saves over £3,700 per year on energy

Co-Chomunn na Hearadh (Harris Community Shop) on the Isle of Harris used the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) loan from Resource Efficient Scotland to purchase high-efficiency refrigerated display cabinets – reducing its energy use by around 40% and saving £3,750 per year.

Co-Chomunn na Hearadh is a community-owned shop in Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. The shop is spread over two floors with facilities including a mini supermarket, a gallery and a meeting space. Co-Chomunn na Hearadh stocks a regular supply of high-quality goods, including fresh fruit and vegetables.

It was predicted that 80% of the electricity consumed by the building was used to run the shop’s 18 refrigerated cabinets and freezers.

Co-Chomunn na Hearadh staff contacted the Resource Efficient Scotland team for support in reducing the running costs of these appliances and improving energy efficiency. The team recommended that replacing the display chillers and freezers with high-efficiency units could reduce energy consumption by 40%, save the shop £3,750 per year and reduce carbon dioxide equivalentemissions by 17.9 tonnes.

“The SME loan and technical support received from Resource Efficient Scotland made it easy to justify the investment in new refrigerated displays. Co-Chomunn na Hearadh is run for and by the people of Leverburgh, and the money we save through energy efficiency will be reinvested into expanding the business and enhancing the quality of service for the community”. Chris Ross, Chairman, Co-Chomunn na Hearadh.

The Resource Efficient Scotland team then supported the shop to apply for and receive an unsecured, interest-free loan from the Scottish Government to fund the upgrade. The new chillers were installed in July 2016 and are making a big difference to the store’s energy use.

Our support is funded by the Scottish Government and by the European Regional Development Fund through the £73 million Resource Efficiency Circular Economy Accelerator Programme.
