Scotland throws out nearly 1.4 million tonnes of food and drink every year. Learn how we can help your business to reduce food waste and save money through free practical expert help and funding

Avoidable food and drink waste is costing your business money and profits:  

  • 56% of food and drink manufacturing waste is estimated to be avoidable
  • 75% of food waste in the Scottish hospitality and food services sector is avoidable

In 2017 we have provided food and drink focused support to over 100 SME food and drink business, resulting in total identified cost savings of over £4 million.

We can support you to reduce avoidable food and drink waste, saving your business money and increasing profits. Your actions will also assist the Scottish Government to tackle their target to reduce food waste by 33% by 2025. 

Food and drink businesses have benefited from a range of practical, fully funded support and capital funding to save money and improve profits by reducing food waste. Support provided includes: 

  • Food waste audit
  • Implementation support
  • 1-to-1 training
  • Financial via the Waste Prevention Implementation Fund
  • Restaurants have also benefited from Good to Go doggy bags to reduce food plate waste

Businesses who have benefited from our practical, 1-to-1 expert support include: 

Paterson Arran Paterson Arran segregate all food waste and have a robust monitoring programme in place that measures and logs food waste at source. Working in partnership with the company, we identified further process improvements such as installing catchment trays and upgrading the driver and production line, with identified annual savings to the business of over £36,000.

Bapu Hospitality  We worked with Bapu Hospitality to identify opportunities to reduce food waste in two of their Indian Restaurants, The Dahkin and The Dhabba. In doing so, we calculated annual cost savings of over £5,000. through menu review, portion control and increased customer engagement.

Stewart Brewing We undertook a free food and drink waste opportunities assessment for Stewart Brewing which identified the potential to save the site £15,000 through installation of a centrifuge.  Financial support was received through the Waste Prevention Implementation Fund to fund the centrifuge and the installation.
