In Scotland, we throw away nearly 1.4 million tonnes of food and drink every year.

That’s a lot of waste, and a big waste uplift bill. When you also consider the energy and money that went into growing, transporting, storing, and serving this food, the true cost is staggering.

It’s staggering in financial terms – every 180-litre bin of food waste thrown away actually costs £200. And it’s staggering in environmental terms too - the food and drink sector accounts for 20% of the UK’s CO2 emissions.

But there’s good news.

Latest research shows that Scotland can reduce the amount of food we throw away by 75%.  And lots of work is already being done across the country to turn this into a reality. In fact, the Scottish Government has set a 33% reduction target to be met by 2025.

You can play your part too. There’s lots of ways you can reduce waste in your business. And taking action will not only help you reduce waste. It can also cut your costs and boost profits - without impacting on your customer service levels.

To help you, we’ve teamed up with Orkney Islands Council, Orkney Zero Waste and Orkney Food and Drink to bring a week of free local training and learning events. Taking place from 22 to 25 January, there are lots of fun, interactive and educational events happening.

Get involved and book your place today.
